Greene County Genealogical Society
~by Valerie Ogren
Meeting notice: The next meeting will be Saturday, Dec. 6, at 10 am in the Jefferson public library. One of our newest members, Bob Tucker, will present a program “The Hoppes Family from Switzerland to America.” Bob has done extensive research on several of his family lines and we appreciate his willingness to share his knowledge. There will be a brief business meeting during which the 2015 officers will be installed. The basement meeting room is handicapped accessible. Guests are always welcome!
Food pantry: Please bring one (or more) items for the Greene County ARC. Sharing with others during the Christmas season has become a tradition with our small group just as it has with other larger organizations. I understand they have a particular need for meat, so cash or a check would also be appreciated to allow Diane to purchase that.
New library elevator/lift: Work will begin soon in preparation for installing a new elevator at the library. Because of this, we ask that you call ahead re: availability of our reference library. However, keep in mind that ALL the Greene County publications and microfilm are also available in the genealogy section of the adult library. Stay tuned. It may become necessary to have the January meeting at a different location. We will keep you posted. If we are closed for a time and you need a place to do more extensive research, hustle on down to 628 E. Grand in Des Moines or check out the IGS web page at http://iowagenealogy.org/.
Maintain access to records: It seems that every time another election rolls around there is word that danger exists in one part of the country or another that there may be legislation proposed to restrict access to records which are now public. We have heard of no threat in this area, but you never know. The Federation of Genealogical Societies is one of the “watch dog” organizations. They are asking your help since they need 10,000 signatures before the end of 2014. Please check out their web page for more information at http://www.fgs.org/rpac/2014/11/06/genealogists-declaration-of-rights-we-need-your-support/
Reference library: Hours are Wednesday afternoon from 1 to 4 and Saturday mornings from 9 to 12. Other times may be arranged by appointment. Volunteers will assist you with any research problems you may have. [See previous notice about the new elevator.]
